The Sportsbike that can do it all: CBR 150R   (Amir Rahman)

Honda’s new machine as a “racing icon,” Mihara cited three major features of the new CBR150R which he believes will draw the interest of motorcycle enthusiasts wanting a daily commuter bike, but are also itching to race during weekends.

THE STYLING & SITTING POSITION:

First introduced in 2016, Honda has updated its CBR 150R in Indonesia for this year. The 2020 edition gets a new ‘Dominator Matte Black’ color which is matte black color with red accents on the fairing, front fender, and the body. In addition, it has also made some changes to the liveries of the Matte Black variant and Victory Red colors. From its previous large single-headlamp look, the new CBR150R adopted aggressive twin-LED headlights, as well as a new digital meter panel display for improved riding ergonomics. This new display highlights the speedometer, odometer, trip meter, fuel gauge, clock, and engine temperature. Adding up to its sleek stance is the new side cowl design with a sleek, sharper edge.

The Honda CBR 150R boasts of styling that closely resembles the Japanese company’s flagship model – the CBR 1000RR, albeit in petite packaging. As sporty as it may seem, the CBR 150R’s riding position has just the right compromise between track day fun and everyday riding practicality. I bet that riding this bike on long hauls during the weekend won’t be a back-breaker. The seat height measures 787mm, which suits the average Pinoy height of 5’6″.

ENGINE PERFORMANCE & HANDLING:

The CBR150R is equipped with a 150cc, liquid-cooled, four-stroke, DOHC, four-valve engine that provides class-leading performance. Second, the CBR150R’s new cross-frame chassis provides excellent stability, agility, and comfort by way of weight reduction and mass centralization for maximum power. The engine produces 17HP of impressive peak power at 9000RPM and 13.5NM of maximum torque at 7000RPM. It is paired with a clicky six-speed gearbox.

It has a 12L fuel capacity which is slightly smaller than the previous model’s 13.2L container. The new CBR150R’s wheelbase also grew a little by 0.6inch as compared to its predecessors.

It is now equipped with a pro-link rear mono-shock that translates to flexible riding stability.

THE BRAKES:

The CBR 150R has both front and rear petal disk brakes. With its price tag, it would be much appreciated if this motorcycle was equipped with an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) straight from the factory. With motorcycles models like these, selling like hotcakes especially to newbie riders, ABS might be the difference between life and death. You now have the option for ABS for an extra 30,000BDT. If you are thinking to get one for yourself, I will recommend you getting the ABS version of the CBR 150R if you are a newbie/amateur.

THE PRICING AND COMPETITION:

The CBR 150R retails for 450,000BDT (480,000BDT for ABS Version). If you are looking for a sportbike that you can daily comfortably then the CBR 150R is the choice you will most likely make.

This bike competes with KTM RC125 and Yamaha YZF-R15 V3.
The Europian KTM RC 125  retails for 600,000BDT, whereas the Indian one retails for 390,000BDT. With that price, you are really not getting what you are paying for. It would be fair to buy an RC200 if we did not have the engine displacement limit in our country.

The Indonesian Yamaha YZF-R15 V3 retails for 525,000BDT and the Indian R15 goes for 485,000BDT.

THE VERDICT:

All told, the CBR 150R is a good buy. It’s fuel efficiency and handling is perfect for any rider who wants a motorcycle that can do it all: a motorcycle for everyday use and weekend out-of-town rides with his riding group. I also think that this bike would be well suited for female riders. It’s not intimidating at all, considering its low 787 mm seat height and the smooth power delivery.
