THE CHRONICLES OF THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY

Ford Motor Company commonly known as Ford, is an American multifunctional automaker that is based in the United States of America with its main headquarter in Dearborn, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. Henry Ford was the founder of Ford Motor Company in the year 1903, making its name for the world’s first moving assembly line which reduced the chassis assembly time having a huge impact over the whole car manufacturing industry around the world. Ford Motor Company went on to become the largest and most profitable industry in the world with its innovations helping them survive the Great Depression and still making vehicles 117 years later. Ford has been efficiently broadening its market by cutting edge automobile design, with a zeal to go further. Ford started their journey in Bangladesh in the year 2008 with AG Automobiles Limited. Since then AG Automobiles has been importing and selling not just luxurious cars but also providing incredibly sophisticated service to all their precious and loyal Ford customers. AG Automobiles has kept its game up by ensuring complete post-service satisfaction and value for money.

Ford Mustang was introduced in the early 1960s by the then Vice President and General Manager of Ford, Lee Iacocca, envisioned to provide a sporty pony car to the youth-market of America, Mustang was based on the compact Ford Falcon which was a full-sized car, very popular in the Australian Market. With the long heritage the Mustang upholds, with the 6th generation in production, Anwar Group is bringing the car to our shores under the dealership of AG Automobiles.

Before we get to know more about the Mustang, we need to know the long time racing pedigree the Ford Motor Company has made starting with the famous Ford VS Ferrari corporate revenge that has become one of the great modern automotive yarn in the world of automobile. Ford lacked in one sector and that was the racing division which was greatly affecting their sale in the early year of 1960. To fill the gap, Ford approached Ferrari as an easy ticket out of the situation but conflict over the deal at the last moment mined by Enzo Ferrari made Henry Ford II take a far-reaching decision to build their own racing car to compete at the most prestigious endurance race, The Le Mans, to seek revenge in Ferrari’s own playground.

With the help of Ken Miles, a brilliant WWII vet, unbelievable on the track and in the garage accompanied by Carroll Shelby, an American automobile designer, entrepreneur and best known for involvement with the AC Cobra and Mustang for Ford Motor Company, on the team they set off to make the big American dream a reality. A deadline of 10 months was given until the 1964 race. For the next 2 consecutive years, Ferrari won the Le Man but the Ford was still determined to tame Ferrari’s prancing horse. Shelby helped develop the MKII version of the original GT40 which entered 1966 Le Man. Of 8 GT40 that entered, 3 finished in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd position dethroning the prideful Ferrari proving the company’s right as a track leader. Now knowing the racing history of Ford, we shed some light on the Mustang.

The Mustang has been known as the favorite pony car to the rest of the world for its amazing V8 configured Coyote engine but for the first time, Ford introduced their 2.3 liter EcoBoost turbocharged inline-four pushing out 310hp and 300nm of torque engine in the S550 6th generation chassis which has made it to Bangladesh. The EcoBoost is coupled up with a 3.31 limited-slip rear axle which makes the tyre grip to the tarmac coupled with 6-speed manual transmission (MT82) as standard but the options list can get you 10-speed Select-Shift (6R80) automatic transmission. The options list goes on with the 3.55 TORSEN limited-slip rear and Active Valve Performance Exhaust System and Quad tips. We at Turbine believe that maximum torque and horsepower are just numbers if the power cannot be delivered on the tarmac and to do that Ford has to think it through which leads us to the handling department. For handling the Mustang EcoBoost comes with 330mm front brake rotors with 2 piston caliper which helps it brake at a stopping distance of 39m from 100-0km/h. The Independent rear suspension has been a huge upgrade from the previous generation as it can corner easily making its Japanese rival go back to their drawing board. More featured like Electronic line-lock, Launch Control, Selectable-effort Electric Power-Assist Steering (EPAS), and Monotube Shocks, grippy bars, and rear cross-axis suspension joints come as standard. The EcoBoost sits on 17-inch Sparkle silver-painted aluminum wheel with P235/55R17 A/S tires from the factory but a wide range of optional wheels and tires can be provided.

What is a car if it goes fast and is great at handling if it does not look appealing? The Mustang has been one of the longest-running production cars to retain its body line from its original Mustang, being true to its root. The long nose and the sloppy fastback rear makes it stand out of the crowd. The S550 Mustang is 1916mm wide giving it a wider stance and 1381mm tall making it look aggressive in the eye of the automobile enthusiasts. To reduce the mass, Ford made the bonnet and front wings get sculptured out of aluminum, other compounds are sourced from aluminum making the curb-weight 1655kg for the EcoBoost variant. This improved response of the car and front: rear weight distribution. Chassis of the new Mustang is 28 percent stiffer than the previous generation thanks to the use of high-strength steels and manufacturing techniques. Other than that it is the dual Bright exhaust with rolled polished tips that deliver the sweet harmony to our ear from the turbocharged 2.3litre. Daytime running lights add a touch of contemporary look to the front Fascia. The rear is also uplifted with LED sequential taillights. To add to the sportiness of the car, hood vents are added and decklid spoiler comes as a factory option. Ford also adds that the styling change has reduced the aerodynamic drag.

The Interior is sought after with the use of cloth front bucket seats. The seats are upholstered and the bolsters help the passenger be secure in the seats during track time. The 12.4 inch LCD instrument cluster provides all the necessary information of the car, which the driver can further configure according to the liking from three modes, normal, sport, and track mode.

Inside the S550 Mustang EcoBoost 6-speaker sound system with AM/FM stereo, FordPass connect and FordPass App can be found. The steering wheel is leather-wrapped with Cruise Control and audio controls with telescoping steering column adjustability to suit the driver’s driving position. The climate control has easy to use interface consisting mostly of buttons and knobs but it comes with factory Cabin Particulate Air Filter. The interior is plush and well-built making it a nice place to be in and daily driving friendly.

Apart from the Mustang EcoBoost, AG Automobiles has been bringing the Ford Ranger Raptor to Bangladesh. Ford is a familiar brand name for its heavy-duty truck lineup. The Ford performance tuned Ranger Raptor has carved itself from the other mediocre mid-size truck available simply because it is like no other pick-up currently on sale. The Ranger Raptor has shown its capability both on and off-road, thanks to the engineering modification turning it into a seriously impressive bit of kit. Like the Mustang EcoBoost, the Ranger Raptor with the small 2.0litre diesel engine pushes out decent power making the Ranger an easy car to fall in love with. Inspiration for the Ranger Raptor has been taken directly from its elder brother and America’s favorite F-150 Raptor by taking its attitude, road presence, and Dakar Rally Capability. On paper, the Ranger Raptor is pretty impressive as it ditches the conventional leaf spring that the Raptor uses.

The suspension has been changed to coil spring, a Watt’s linkage for the rear suspension, and Fox Motorsport dampers all around, something that can also be seen used on Ford’s Fiesta World Rally car. The whole chassis has been built from ground zero keeping in mind the driving performance. The chassis is strengthened to not only improve handling but to face harsh Dakar-style driving by toughing it up. The Ranger Raptor is considerably large with a dimension of 44mm wider, 168mm longer, and 52mm taller than the standard Ranger. The ground clearance is impressive standing near 51mm that has improved the departure angle. It’s the bodywork that makes the Ranger Raptor stand out. The wheel arches are flared, housing 17inch black wheels that wear meaty BFGoodrich tires which are made especially for off-road with 20% stiffer sidewalls. The front bumper is chassis mounted and beneath it, there is a skid plate. The grill is a direct copy from the sibling F-150 Raptor that proudly stamps the name ‘FORD’ on it in huge letters.

Apart from its rugged exterior, there’s leather and suede seats that come heated from the factory and has electronically adjustable seat rails and lumbar support. Ranger Raptor has a sport steering, a smattering of blue stitched leather dashboard, and Ford’s SYNC3 infotainment system set with an 8.8inch touchscreen.

With the addition of all these engineering modifications, the Raptor is more capable than any of its competitors making it more suitable for a practical daily workhorse. The payload capacity is impressive, proficient of 680kg of load and pulling capacity of 2.5 tonnes. The on-road driving is impeccable as it has truly set a benchmark with its newly designed coil spring and rear suspension setup eradicating the traditional shudder and patter that is inherent in most of the pickups fitted with leaf springs. The 210hp from the 2.1litre four-cylinder diesel engine is adequate for the bustling city of Dhaka and the rough terrain outside the capital.

AG Automobile is truly proud of their products. Both the Mustang EcoBoost and the Ranger Raptor has proved its meritorious in their respective category. Their strength has already been witnessed and admired by the automotive journalists of Bangladesh.
